Douris canal network is incomplete and there is no sewage treatment plant. Waste sorting does not take place. The municipality needs, among other things, a water wagon, suction/sewage wagon and pesticide sprayers. Priorities: pursuing and consolidating a UNICEF waste sorting project; Ensuring drinkable water (Drilling water wells, building a water tank (2,000 m2) and a drinkable water network of 18,000 meters), street lighting using alternative energies (2,000 poles needed); Creating agricultural roads (7,000 meters) and rehabilitating old roads, public gardens and improving green spaces
Douris is a village located approximately 3 km southwest of Baalbek in the Bekaa Valley, Lebanon 20% of the local population work in agriculture. The economy, services and trade employ 45% of the local population. The rest is divided between public and private service workers (including the military). Inhabitants: 18,000 (Winter), 20,000 (Summer) Number of refugees: 4,500 refugees from Syria, 60 Palestinian refugees There are 3,200 housing units and 800 non-residential units. Douris has 2 hospitals but no pharmacy. 2 public schools,5 private schools. Projects in process: Building new HQ for the Municipality with the support of the Baalback Federation of Municipalities, small cultural centre with the Support of MercyCorps, Medical/Health Guidance for Women and Children in Cooperation with Amel Association, funded by Fondation Mérieux, Building a sewage network (5,000 m) in cooperation with the Council for Development and Reconstruction (CDR), Purchasing equipment for public works (with CDR), Waste sorting project with the local NGO “LOST”, funded by UNICEF, Establishing a Pine Tree Reserve of 10,000 m2 with “LOST”, funded by the World Food Programme (WFP), Rehabilitation of the Centre National des Arts et Métiers (CNAM) that is part of the Lebanese University (public university) in cooperation with the Directorate of Civil-Military Cooperation of the Lebanese Army, Food Safety Project in cooperation with the Federation of Municipalities of Baalback and the Islamic Health Council, Free medical service every Thursday (free diagnosis, distribution of medicine) in cooperation with the Red Cross, Expanding the entrance road to the village and building two roundabouts, Experience in the field of municipal development cooperation: Close cooperation with 6 local NGOs, in particular a women's NGO and a development NGO.
